With origins dating back as far as the Roman Empire based on ancient cookbooks, the grilled cheese sandwich became a phenomenon in America in the early 20th century out of necessity. After James L. Kraft patented processed cheese in the mid 1910s, the Great Depression prompted many to find a meal that was fit for both their palates and their budgets – making the grilled cheese sandwich a staple of many American households. Tom & Chee takes the standard grilled cheese to the next level with elevated ingredients and flavor combinations – all of which are bolstered by the premiere goods produced by dedicated farmers at the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin.

National Grilled Cheese Day is typically celebrated every April 12, which is also Easter Sunday. Out of respect for Tom & Chee guests and employees, this year’s celebration will move to Monday, April 13 with the approval of the Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin.

In the wake of the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic, Tom & Chee President and CEO Roger David has ensured taking steps to make sure all of the company’s locations are safe for employees and guests alike. This includes following the recommendations of the CDC and local health departments, such as committing to social distancing, temporarily closing dining rooms while remaining open for drive-thru, carry out and delivery.

“National Grilled Cheese Day is one of our favorite days of the year, and one we always look forward to celebrating as a company with our fans,” said David. “I’m an over-protective dad – ask my kids and they’ll agree – but we’ve been going above and beyond standard cleanliness/sanitization guidelines, as well as CDC recommendations. We must always ensure the safety of our staff and guests to feed our communities throughout this crisis.”

“This year, things look a little different, but we felt it’s still important to share a delicious treat with guests. The grilled cheese donut, a perfect combination of savory and sweet, is what really put Tom & Chee on the map,” said David. “If you’ve tried it, you know it’s a perfect combo. If you haven’t tried it, this is a great day to do it.”

John Gerth, owner of several Cincinnati-area Tom & Chee restaurants, agrees.

“Of course, we wish we could serve our fans in person, but we want to keep our friends safe at all times, which is why we are being diligent in our carry-out, curbside and delivery service,” said Gerth. “We want you to enjoy a handcrafted melt and original grilled cheese donut on National Grilled Cheese Day, which is why we’re continuing to go above and beyond for our guests.”
